Just like these, video games
are an integral mainstay in college life, whether you're male or female, freshman or graduate
student. Since the most of us have had the pleasure of growing up with the NES and it's
successors, we've naturally carried this newfound hobby throughout high school and into our
respective university dormitories. Contrary to the historical college stereotype a la Revenge
of the Nerds, video games are no longer for the math and science clubs. Titles like Goldeneye,
Counterstrike, and Halo have revolutionized the college world with it's fun and insanely
addictive multiplayer capabilities. For the last few years, Madden has dominated college life
with countless campus-wide tournaments involving thousands of college students nation-wide.
Few other campus activities have had the level of success that some of these games have
reached; it truly is amazing how video games have become such a huge part of college life.
That being said, I've compiled a list of five must-have titles for that every college student
should pick up. While some of these are already released, the rest are all scheduled for
release before Christmas.
The first of the five is one many of you have probably already pre-ordered and are itching to
play seeing that it arrives on store shelves tomorrow. Halo 2, already, has been touted as the
greatest Xbox game to ever grace the system's short lifespan. With improved graphics,
gameplay, and the new Xbox Live addition Halo 2 will keep you entertained and busy for weeks,
if not months. While the single player reportedly can be finished in around 10-15 hours or so,
depending on your ability, it alone is still worth the purchase. If you own an xbox, and you
don't pick up this game, shame on you. Shame, shame, shame on you.
The second pick of must-have titles for this Fall is Everquest II, the sequel largest, most-
popular massively-multiplayer RPG ever. Over two million people have experienced the beautiful
world of Norrath in the first Everquest and are still playing in its dynamic universe to this
very day. Considering the first Everquest has been out since 1997, it's staying power and
adaptability show just how good and addictive this game is. In fact, it's a perfect game for
the casual college gamer that doesn't necessarily have all the time in the world to play.
Whether you want to play once a week or every day, for 8 hours straight or just a couple,
Everquest II will fit your needs. The only downside to this game may be it's cost, since it's
$50 for the game then roughly $15 each month to keep playing. If you can afford it however, go
get it tomorrow when it hits shelves. I'll see you online.
The final three titles that round out the top five are Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the
PS2, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2(KOTOR2) for the Xbox, and Metriod Prime 2 Echoes
for the Nintendo Gamecube. KOTOR2 is the sequal to last year's Game of the Year, and the followup is sure to be just as good, if not better. Lots of anticipation here for that one; KOTOR2 hits shelves in early December. GTA San Andreas has been heralded as one of the greatest games of all time, and although I haven't played it seeing that I don't own a PS2, I don't doubt people's claims. San Andreas is already selling like the Paris Hilton video so be sure to pick up your copy today. Metriod Prime 2, as we round out the top five, arguably will be the best game available on the Gamecube. It's set for release in about a week, on November 15th. Must-have for every Gamecube owner looking for a new addiction. All five of these games will earn their share of national awards, and they all deserve a spot in your collections.
